International Tyre Shipping: What Every Distributor Must Know
Shipping tyres internationally involves specific documentation, packaging, and customs requirements. This guide covers the essentials for wholesale buyers.
Shipping tyres internationally is a process with distinct logistical and regulatory requirements that differ meaningfully from other cargo categories. Tyres are classified as a specific commodity with defined HS codes, are subject to import duties in most markets, and require specific packaging and loading arrangements to comply with carrier guidelines and destination country regulations.
The most commonly used HS code for new passenger car tyres is 4011.10, while truck and bus tyres fall under 4011.20. Used tyres are typically classified under 4012.20. Incorrect HS code classification is one of the most frequent causes of customs delays and unexpected duty assessments — and the liability sits with the importer of record. Experienced exporters like Okelcor prepare full commercial invoices with verified HS codes for every shipment.
For ocean freight, tyre shipments are typically containerised — either in 20-foot or 40-foot containers depending on volume. Standard PCR tyres can be stacked and loaded efficiently to maximise container utilisation, but TBR tyres require more careful loading due to their size and weight. Container weights must comply with VGM (Verified Gross Mass) regulations under SOLAS, which applies to all ocean freight globally.
Insurance is an often-overlooked element of international tyre logistics. While many freight forwarders offer basic cargo insurance, the specific value and fragility characteristics of tyre shipments warrant dedicated cargo coverage. Buyers should confirm whether their supplier's FOB quotation includes insurance, or whether they need to arrange independent marine cargo insurance for each consignment.
